Exploring Delaware: Broadkill Beach

Drive on to Broadkill.jpg

Alright y’all - I know I’ve been kind of repetitive with some of my content recently, but I wanted to loop back to Broadkill Beach one last time. I wanted to use Broadkill Beach as a springboard to start a new series of posts here on the blog that I am calling Exploring Delaware.

Exploring Delaware has one simple goal: share with you all the cool places I find and the places I love here in the first state.

Every now and again, you may even get a guest post from someone I know through social media!

Now, let’s talk about Broadkill Beach a little bit. For as long as I have been coming to and living in Delaware, I never actually went to Broadkill Beach until this year. We got a new rental listing up there, and my mom, having taken over my rental portfolio when I switched jobs, wanted to see where the house was. So she, my dad, and I all rode up there on a shared day off. At first, I didn’t know how I felt about it because it was so far off the beaten path.

More recently, I went back to Broadkill to take photos for our Milton Community Page at work. On this trip, I came to the conclusion I actually did enjoy it. Being off the beaten path, it is so much calmer and less crowded than Lewes or Rehoboth, which I appreciated. You also have some really fun things to do close by - you pass Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge along the way to Broadkill Beach, and downtown Milton is about 10 minutes west.

As far as things to do at Broadkill Beach itself, I recommend heading to the Beach Plum Island reserve at the southern end. This reserve is part of Cape Henlopen State Park, and features a drive-on beach access. I also saw and explored part of a small trail that ran along the Broadkill River, a brackish river that runs from Roosevelt Inlet in Lewes to Milton. Being on the Delaware Bay, you can also spend a day at the beach as you would in Lewes or Rehoboth, just without the crowds like I mentioned before. This, to me, means paddle boarding or kayaking, swimming, and just relaxing in general.

In the short amount of time I spent at Broadkill Beach working on this project, I decided I enjoyed it a lot. Though I wasn’t there long, I definitely encourage you to check this hidden gem out. I know I’ll definitely be heading back up there sometime to explore the area some more!
