Two Eye-Catching Finishes - Week of February 10th
This last week was quite a whirlwind of work - 13 shoots in total! From vacation rentals to sales listings, the shoots were all over the place, and I had a blast capturing them all.
That said, there were two truly eye-catching finishes in one of the homes I captured on Friday that REALLY caught my eye and were worth putting a whole blog post together for. The listing isn’t on the market yet so I won’t give away the address at this time, but will share it is in Rehoboth Beach and is going to be listed with Jessica Harrison of The Debbie Reed Team at ReMax Realty Group. Each of these finishes, in my opinion, were so cool that I did my best to capture them in their own close-up detail shot.
Let’s take a moment and get into them:
Local Accent Wall
The first finish that caught my eye was this incredibly cool accent wall in the dining room. It came as a surprise when I turned the corner and saw it, as you can’t see it when you first walk in the door and down the small entryway.
As soon as it registered that it was a map of Southern Delaware from Rehoboth Beach to the Indian River Inlet, I knew I was looking at something awesome. It really fit the theme and feel of the home nicely - the colors nicely accented the paint, and it fed into the overall coastal feel of the home without going over the top.
It added also added a really nice local touch to the theme of the decor, which outside of this wall was mostly generically beachy or coastal in nature.
Beachy Backsplash
Before I got into real estate photography, I worked for a local brokerage in different roles including as a rental agent. In that role, one thing I always wondered before going into a home to take some photos for our website or to show it to a potential guest was whether or not it would feel, “like the beach walked in an threw up everywhere”. I don’t say that to mean that coastal decor is a bad thing, but instead that as a way to recognize that it can be VERY easily overdone.
That said, in the kitchen of this home the backsplash added a beachy feel that worked quite nicely with the rest of the home without making it feel overdone in any way.
At first glance, I saw only the colors of the tiles - pale green/blue, white, and tan. This alone gave the kitchen a color pop that fed into the decor and color scheme.
Upon closer inspection as I was doing wide-angle photos of the kitchen, though, I realized the tan tiles had sand and shells in them. It was really surprising, but at the same time, a very nice added touch!
Lesson: Don’t Overdo It
If there is one lesson this home can share with anyone decorating a home, it is simple - don’t over do it.
You can make your home feel beachy without going overboard. Find little touches like these (even if the map took up a whole wall), that can bring the feel of the beach into your home without, as I said earlier, making it look like the beach walked in and invaded the space.
This lesson applies to every style, too - I may be focusing it on coastal decor since that was most prevalent in this home, but it also applies to farmhouse, scandavian, etc. Don’t overdo it.
